THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Fishermen from Kerala are stranded in Iran due to the coronavirus outbreak. Fishermen from Vizhinjam, Pozhiyoor and Marayanadu in Thiruvananthapuram are stranded in the country. They are not able to get out of their rooms as an alert has been announced in Iran following the outbreak of the virus.

Around 200 fishermen arrived in Iran on a fishing visa about four months ago. However, in the wake of the virus threat, they are not allowed to come out of their rooms.

There are almost 23 people in one room. 17 of them are from Vizhinjam, Pozhiyoor and Mariyanadu. According to reports, they have difficulty in getting food. Relatives are trying to contact them. Hints say that there are people from Tamil Nadu in the team of 200.

Fisheries Minister J Mercykutty Amma said they have entrusted NORKA for their release. If permitted, they will be brought back. The minister also said that facilities including food will be provided.
