THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Latest report suggests that around 60,000 tonnes of sand that got deposited in the six regulators during the recent floods will be soon introduced in the market for sale. The sand, which is of high quality, is expected to be worth Rs 7.5 crores.

Tenders were invited for removing the accumulated sand from Velliyankallu, Purapallikkavu, Manjummal, Changaramkunnu, Chenthuruthy and Pookottumana regulators. A contract regarding this will be finalised this month. According to sources, while the entire sand will be removed from the regulators within June, around 1 lakh cubic meter sand will be brought to the market by May.

It is expected that the sale of accumulated sand can help the construction sector by bringing about a regulation of sand price. Moreover, 20% of the amount obtained by selling this sand will be used for the repair works of the regulators and dams.
