THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala on Sunday reported its 24th case of COVID 19 infection as a doctor from Thiruvananthapuram tested positive for the virus. At present, there are 21 active cases in the state while three patients have recovered last month.

Speaking at a press conference, Health Minister KK Shailaja said the doctor had recently returned from Spain. She also added that all those who have closely interacted with the doctor have been kept under observation. Authorities will also take measures to strengthen screening for COVID 19 patients at airports, she added. While revealing her plans to visit those who are being kept under observation for coronavirus, the minister said that awareness programs will be increased across the state.

The minister further added that strict screening is being conducted at railway stations across the state with the help of police. Those people entering the state by road will also have to undergo screening from Monday onwards, she added. "However, there is no need to panic and people should not be scared to come out of their homes. Directives have been issued so as to avoid large gatherings that may lead to the spread of the virus. Special care will be taken to ensure that there won't be any hindrance to public transport and other facilities," she said.

Earlier on Sunday, a UK national, who was holidaying in Munnar, had tested positive for the novel coronavirus. He and his wife have been admitted to an isolation ward at Kalamassery Medical College while 17 others who travelled with them have been kept under observation.
