MUMBAI: A 64-year-old COVID-19 patient died here on Tuesday, making him the first such victim in Maharashtra and India’s third reported death due to coronavirus.

The man was under treatment at the state-run Kasturba Hospital in south central Mumbai for the past few days.

Health and government officials concerned declined to share further details.

There are another 38 coronavirus positive patients admitted in hospitals across the state. Last week two people - a 68-year-old woman in Delhi and a 76-year-old woman in Karnataka had died. Both the deaths were linked to COVID-19, which originated in China's Wuhan city. The government has declared the novel coronavirus outbreak in the country a "notified disaster", in a move it called "a special one-time dispensation", to contain the spread of the infectious virus.

Nearly 14,000 people were infected with the novel coronavirus globally over the past day, bringing the total number of confirmed cases above 167,500, the World Health Organization (WHO) said in its report on Tuesday.
