KOCHI: Today is Maundy Thursday, the day celebrated by believers in memory of the last supper of Jesus Christ along with his disciples on the eve of his crucifixion.
The ceremonial foot-washing is held in churches on this day to imitate Jesus, who washed his disciples' feet before the Last Supper as a sign and example of humility and love. But, this time the churches did away with it as Corona lockdown is in effect all over Kerala.
However other rituals took place inside closed churches on account of Corna restrictions. As the ceremonies were telecast live, believers virtually took part in them from their homes.
In each church, not more than five persons attended the ceremonies. Archbishop Cardinal Mar George Alencherry led the ceremonies at Ernakulam St Mary’s Basilica church and Kothamangalam St George Cathedral Bishop Mar George Madathikkandathil conducted ceremonies at Kothamangalam St George Cathedral.
