THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Most part of Kerala is now getting strong rains due to the impact of formation of cyclone Amphan over Bay of Bengal.
Yellow alert was declared in Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kotayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, and Malappuram. Heavy rains that started in southern districts on Sunday morning is continuing today also. In the strong wind, there have been wide-spread destruction caused by uprooted trees and broken tree branches.
At Vaikom in Kottayam, the storm that accompanied rain on Sunday night caused heavy damages to shops and buildings. The chuttambalam of famous Vakom Mahadeva temple got damaged after a banyan tree uprooted and fell on it.
The fire force personnel and locals jointly cut the tree and removed it from the place. Several other houses and buildings in the area also got damaged in similar manner after broken tree branches and trees fell on them.
There have also been disruption of electric supply due to snapped electric lines and destruction to crops. In districts such as Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Kochi, heavy downpour is continuing relentlessly.
