THRISSUR: The shutters of the Bhoothathankettu dam were slightly opened on Monday as part of controlling the water level in the Periyar river. The decision to open the shutters was taken in order to avoid damages that can be caused by the rising water level due to incessant rain.

The water level has been lowered in the Periyar Valley canals. Meanwhile, the government has instructed to open the check dams of other rivers as well. Following this, several check dams including the one in Kothamangalam Kuroor stream have been opened. Though there has been frequent rain in the region, the water level has not exceeded the limit. Earlier, the IMD had informed that the state will continue to receive heavy rainfall for the next few days.

It is learnt that authorities have instructed to completely open the Bhoothathankettu on May 25. However, the shutters might be completely opened even before that if the water level rises beyond the limit.
