THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As heavy to very heavy rains continue in different parts of Kerala, low lying areas in the State are facing the threat of floods.

The south and central Kerala has been receiving plentiful rains since Thursday night. At Karamana in Thiruvananthapuram, overflowing river has left houses on its either side inundated.

The Indian Met department has warned that in the next three hour, there are chances for heavy rains and strong wind with a speed of 45km/hour. Alert has also been issued in Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Kollam and Thrissur.

According to the Met department, there is a possibility for strong rains accompanied by thunder and lightning in the next five days. The fishermen should keep off the seas.

In the next three hours there will be rains and thunder in Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Thrissur districts. Due to the
continuing heavy rain in Alappuzha, steps have been started to open the Thottapally spillway.

In the Central Kerala, heavy showers that started on Thursday night went on till Friday morning. This has hampered the Operation Break Through project being actively carried out in Kochi to prevent flooding. The alert has also been sounded in high range areas.
