MALAPPURAM: In an unfortunate incident, a 14-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide by setting herself on fire at Valanchery in Malappuram. The tenth standard student identified as Devika of Irimbiliyam Govt Higher Secondary School took the drastic step as she could not attend the online classes. Her charred body was found near her house last evening.

Her parents said that she took the drastic step depressed in missing the classes. She could not attend the online class as she did not have a smartphone and did not have money to repair the damaged TV. This worried her a lot. The body of Devika, daughter of Balakrishnan and Sheeba was found on the courtyard of another house at 5.30 pm last evening.

Devika was found missing from 4 pm Monday evening. Her body was found in a search conducted. An empty bottle of kerosene was recovered from the spot and there is nothing mysterious in the preliminary investigation, said Valancherry station officer M K Shaji. District police chief U Abdul Kareem, Tirur DySP K A Suresh Babu reached the spot and examined the place. The body will be taken to Manjeri Medical College for further examination on Tuesday.
