KOCHI: Even as the threat of community transmission of Covid prevails in Kerala, the number of other communicable diseases are also on the rise. The usual seasonal disease have reared its head with the onset of monsoon.
Within the last one month, 589 cases of dengue fever, 91 cases of leptospirosis have been reported.
For Covid and other communicable diseases, the initial symptoms are the same. This has created an alarming situation.
The initial symptoms are fever and throat pain.
For dengue fever, there will also be muscle pain along with fever. There won’t be symptoms of cold-related fever for dengue fever.
If one has leptospirosis, there will be yellow colour in the eyes. There will be bleeding and leg muscle pain. With a sudden fever, there will also be shivering. There will be strong head pain, muscle pain, pain in calf muscles, back pain, Jaundice (there will be yellow colour on skin and in eyes, urine will be yellow).
If there is jaundice with strong fever, it could be leptospirosis.
Meanwhile, health experts have said that all those who show symptoms of fever need not go for a Covid test. Private labs can conduct the test only with the prescription of a qualified doctor. “In the State now, there is no condition where a patient has to be put under suspicion without epidomological link. In the next three months there are chances for rise in communicable diseases but self-treatment should be avoided,” they say.
