THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: SupplyCo has given a shocking report that 1892 ton raw rice and 627.91 raw wheat stored in various godowns (of NFSA) for distribution through PDS have become rotten.

The suspicion is that quality grains might have been siphoned off for making money and the existing grains are the ones bought from hoarders for distribution through Ration shops.

Once the distribution started, many people began complaining about the quality of the grains. Now it is doubted that attempts are being made to cover up the irregularity by destroying the grains, under the pretext that they have become rotten.

Meanwhile the Civil Supplies department has entrusted a technical committee to probe the allegation.

The question is how so much grains got damaged even after free distribution of rice and wheat was done.

Earlier several irregularities were found in NFSA godowns. There are allegations that good quality rice and wheat grains are siphoned off to black markets through middlemen and low quality grains are stored in various godowns. The attempt now is to destroy these grains.

SupplyCo and Civil Supplies department gave the report on June 14.

Soon after this, several godowns sought permissions for destruction of all rotten grains. This was also rejected by the department.

The quality examination of SupplyCo will be conducted by a committee comprising Food lab representative, FCI representative and Public Distribution department representative. The report will be submitted within 15 days.
