THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Crime Branch IG has given a complaint to the DGP against the “spreading of fake news that top police officers have link with the accused in gold smuggling case”.

DGP Loknath Behera will hand over the complaint to the government. He has decided to take further action over the complaint after seeking the government’s opinion.

In a media publication, there was a news report that the Crime Branch IG has some connection with gold smuggling case accused Swapna Suresh. It was reported that in the gold smuggling case being probed by the Crime Branch, Swapna was called in to be questioned but as this annoyed an IAS officer, an officer under IG rank helped Swapna. The report also mentioned that a top police officer had partaken in Swapna’s cousin’s wedding.

Following this findings, Crime Branch IG Sreejith gave a letter to the DGP on Friday.

“The content of the letter that IPS officers have links with Swapna Suresh showed all senior officers in the bad light and this should be probed. It is the Crime Branch that is investigating the fake harassment case against Swapna and I’m in charge of the case. The reference in the news resulted in levelling of allegations against me and other IGs. At the time mentioned in the report, when the incident is supposed to have taken place, I was not in Kerala,” he informed the DGP.
