THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Swapna Suresh and Sandeep Nair, the two accused in the Thiruvananthapuram gold smuggling case, were sent to NIA custody for one week by the NIA court on Monday. Adv Arjun Ambalapatta, who appeared for the NIA, informed the court that the gold was smuggled for terrorist activities and not for jewellery. He also added that the accused had fabricated fake emblem and seal of the UAE embassy for this purpose. Earlier, the NIA had sought custody of the accused for 10 days. The investigating officials have also requested the court to issue a warrant against Faisal Fareed.
NIA suspects that a large conspiracy threatening national security might be involved in the gold smuggling case. The investigating officers will be now trying to figure out the destination and consumers of the smuggled gold. The officers also suspect that the gold might have reached those having terrorist links.
