MUNNAR: Many plantation workers are trapped in the massive landslide at Munnar. The area has been witnessing torrential rains for the last three days. Mud caved in on top of four houses resided by 83 people adjacent to Kannan Devan Estate in Rajamala Pettimudi. These small four houses have been completely washed away. Reports said many are trapped. Unconfirmed reports said three have died and three rescued. Though police and fire force have left for rescue operations, they are yet to reach the site of the accident. Two hours are needed to reach the place from Munnar. Adverse weather is a major obstacle for rescue workers.
Heavy rains have disrupted traffic and communication in the area. Power has been snapped for days. JCB has to reach the place to remove the mud. Only jeeps can pass through this area. Authorities said rescue efforts are difficult. Nearby hospitals have been asked to make emergency preparations. The National Disaster Response Force will soon reach the place.
Landslides occurred in some other places in Idukki. It was reported in Kozhikanam and Annanthampimala areas.
