KOCHI: The Customs has found out that 4479-kg Cargo comprising 250 packets had been delivered to the UAE consulate general’s office in Thiruvananthapuram. It was claimed to be Quran texts. From the 250 packets, 32 packets were sent to Malappuram in a covered lorry of C-apt after labelling the packets as diplomatic Cargo; C-apt is an institution under higher education department and Jaleel is its chairman.
The Customs has smelt something fishy about the cargo and Jaleel may be questioned to bring clarity to it. The Customs has reportedly taken the Centre’s permission for this.
Jaleel had said that the parcels are still intact in Malappuram. M Abdul Rahman, who was the director at the time of transporting parcel, will also be questioned.
Though the Cargo reached the Consulate office in March, it was on June 18, the packets were shifted to C-apt office in two lorries.
From here, 32 parcels were sent to Malappuram in a covered lorry. Following this, the other lorry went to Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. In this lorry, C-apt driver was avoided from the journey and another driver took the wheels. The Customs will also examine the phone calls between Jaleel and gold smuggling case accused during this time.
Incidentally, not along after shifting of the parcels, the then C-apt director M Abdul Rehman was transferred to the post of LBS director. This incident has also instilled some doubts in the minds of the Customs officers investigating the gold smuggling case.
