THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government handed over a compensation of Rs 1.3 crore to former ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan, arrested in an alleged espionage case. An amount of Rs 60 lakh was handed over to him earlier. The money was handed over to him as per the directive of the Supreme Court.
The cabinet gave in-principle approval to extend the compensation to settle a case which he filed in a Thiruvananthapuram sub court against his unlawful arrest in December 2019. This was in addition to the 50 lakh given following the directive of the Supreme Court and the Rs 10 lakh given following the recommendation of the national human rights commission.
The government had entrusted former chief secretary K Jayakumar to look into the issues raised by Nambi Narayanan and submit recommendations for an amicable settlement in the case. The decision of the cabinet was based on his recommendation.
