NEW DELHI: Abdul Rashid Kalas, a head constable of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, has been posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra- the nation's second-highest peacetime gallantry award- for his outstanding bravery, a government release stated on Friday.

Nine including Wing Commander Vishak Nair were awarded the Shaurya Chakra. The Shaurya Chakra is the third highest gallantry award in peacetime.

President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday approved 84 gallantry awards for personnel in India’s armed forces and members of the Paramilitary Forces for their acts of bravery to protect the country’s security and honour. The awards include one Kirti Chakra, nine Shaurya Chakras, five Bar to Sena Medals (Gallantry), 60 Sena Medals (Gallantry), four Nao Sena Medals (Gallantry) and five Vayu Sena Medals (Gallantry)
