THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An inmate of Poojappura Central Jail died of COVID-19 on Sunday. He has been identified as Manikandan, a native of Kilimanoor. He was 72. Manikandan was the first person confirmed of the virus in Poojappura Jail. He died while undergoing treatment at the medical college.

He was admitted to the hospital after confirmed of the virus four days back. He had old age ailments. It is not clear how Manikandan, who is in jail for one and a half years, contracted the disease.

More than 200 prisoners and an official tested positive of the virus in the tests conducted. Those confirmed of the virus are under observation in the jail auditorium. The authorities said all inmates of the jail will be subjected for tests.

With this, a total of seven have died of the virus in the state today.
