ALAPPUZHA: The Beverages Corporation's revenue has plummeted with the launch of online liquor sales in the state. Before the arrival of Bev-Q app, the corporation had an average daily income of Rs 35 crore but now earns only Rs six to seven crore.
The Beverage Corporation has 270 outlets in the state. Of these, 265 are presently operational. When the sales went online, majority of them are running at a loss now. A shop can make a profit only if it sells at an average of Rs 11 lakh. However, many shops in the state sell for less than Rs two to three lakh.
With the launch of the app, the consumers have lost their freedom to choose the shop, time and product they want. In Kerala, only common people buy liquor from government outlets. Many of them don’t know to use smart phones. Most of the common people buy liquor while returning from work. That routine stopped with the introduction of the app. The Beverages Corporation now gets only 20 percent profit from liquor sales. Salary, shop rent and other expenses are borne from it.
Meantime, Beverages Corporation MD Sparjan Kumar said the issues regarding the app have come to their notice and that everything will be solved soon.
