THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state registered 1553 cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan told the media here. Among the new cases, 1391 persons developed the disease through contact including 156 cases without an identified source of infection. 28 had returned from abroad and 90 from other states. 40 health workers tested positive for the virus in the past 24 hours.

As per some studies, the spread of the disease will increase in the month of October. The next two weeks are crucial, the CM said.

The state recorded 10 COVID deaths on Thursday. There are 21,516 active COVID-19 cases in the state.

There are 1,92,168 persons under observation over various districts in the state including 18,033 at hospitals.

At least 30,342 samples were tested during the last 24 hours.

The government declared 8 new hotspots on Thursday while removing 14 regions from the list. Currently, there are 569 hotspots in the state.
