NEW DELHI: Poll panel will soon take a decision on conducting Chavara and Kuttanad By-elections. Sources in the poll panel said that central election commission (CEC) will soon convene a meeting to take a final decision on this issue. They also said that poll panel hasn’t received yet any letter from the Kerala government demanding to postpone the polls. Once such a letter is received, the matter would be taken up for discussion.
By-polls are also declared in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu where assembly polls will be held within 6 months, but unlike Kerala, they haven’t demanded to postpone the by-polls. The poll panel will also evaluate whether Kerala’s demand is approved by all recognised political parties in the state.
When the CEC gets the letter, it will take the advice of Tikaram Meena, the chief electoral officer in the state. Meena also holds the opinion that by-polls should not be conducted.
