The Cabinet meeting on Wednesday took several decisions including continuing salary cut for six more months. It also spelled out the repayment plan for the deduction made from employees' salaries to tide over the COVID-19 crisis. The Cabinet decided that the amount would be deposited in the Provident fund account of employees which could be withdrawn from June.
As the government plans for six-day six-month salary cut again, Opposition-backed employees’ organisations have expressed their objection. However there is little chance for pro-govt organisations to express their protest. However, all should be ready to make small sacrifices under the present circumstances. That, too, when it is guaranteed by the government these deducted amount will be returned with interest.
Besides decisions on salary cut, the Cabinet took some important decisions though the decisions taken towards the fag end would not benefit much for the government or people.
Nevertheless, decisions to not take up beautification of government buildings, suspend buying of government vehicles and cutting travel expenses are a few good ones.
If the decision to restrict recruitment of school-college teacher is seriously implemented, it can save money for the public exchequer. This will also keep at bay all anomalies in the system which included aided and managements educational institutions.
Austerity measures to reduce government expenses were take based on the report of an expert committee. As the tendency of government servants to take unpaid leave and going abroad for job is increasing, steps will be taken to restrict the leave term to five years.
There is also decision to end appointment through backdoor after making an employee to take long leave . Not only that, it is necessary to end all backdoor appointments. This is necessary to show justice to candidates whose name figure in PSC lists.
It should also be noted there are many officers associate with certain defunct government projects. They can be seen sitting idle and such officers should be redeployed.
Another instruction is to sell off scraps in government offices and abandoned vehicles in police stations.
There are many government lands lying vacant in many parts of the State and at the same time there are many buildings functioning in rented houses. The government should build buildings on these lands so that they could be used as government offices and this can save the money paid as rent
Another important decision was the nod given to the Ordinance brought out for setting up Sree Narayana Opne School in Kollam. Though there was move to sabotage the project, the Ordinance will be implemented once the Governor sign it.
However, it is a big relief that the ill intention of people with vested interests could not ruin the noble concept of the Open University.
