THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The statue of Sree Narayana Guru installed by the state government as part of the centenary of 'We Have No Caste' proclamation has been unveiled. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan unveiled the statue at the Observatory Hills near the Museum in the capital city.
The statue will have a temporary glass roof and a permanent one will be constructed later. A copper plate has been fixed to a 10 ft tall seat. The temporary glass roof is mounted on two iron pillars. 20 cents of land have been separated for the garden.
Minister A K Balan presided over the function attended by chief guest Kadakampally Surendran. Mayor K Sreekumar, MLAs V S Sivakumar, V K Prashanth, O Rajagopal, Sree Narayana Gurukulam secretary Swamy Shubangananda, Lalithakala Akademi chairman Nemom Pushparaj spoke at the function. Sculptor Unni Kanayi was felicitated at the function.
The statue was installed by the culture department at a cost of Rs 1.19 crore. This is the first statue of Guru being installed by the state leadership. The park will have a wall featuring the life events of Guru.
