The IT hub Kazhakoottam is known as the entrance gate of Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of Kerala. The road renovation works going on in this place, which is a heavy vehicular traffic, is testing the patience of not only the natives but also everyone passing through this way.
Initially it was the construction of the bypass that happened, but there was no hassles for people as steps were taken to redirect traffic through alternative routes.
As the four-lane bypass work was completed, the authority felt the need for development of Kazhakoottam junction. The idea of flyover from Kazhakoottam to Technopark sprung to their mind as a means that would resolve the traffic problem at the Technopark, the place frequented by thousands of vehicles every day.
Once the work for the flyover started, the traffic in the Kazhakoottam junction went haywire. Though some regulation was brought in, once the piling for the flyover started, things went out of control. Anyone with some sense had advised the authorities to construct the service roads before constructing the flyover but that advice fell on deaf ears.
It is usual for authorities not to take timely action and put the commoners into miserable conditions. Here also it was just repeated; there is nothing surprising about it.
In the absence of service roads, people are forced to travel to and fro through slushy path; the condition is worse once its rains heavily.
As accidents also became a common sight in the area, the authorities were alerted and may be as a result of this, Minister Kadakampally Surendran visited the spot and made some stopgap arrangements.
It may be suggested that it is better to take steps well in advance with farsightedness to pre-empt such crisis instead of intervening after the situation has worsened.
Not only in Kazhakoottam, in other places also are road constructions are making people’s life miserable. The miseries can be alleviated by proper planning and quick action of alert officials.

The condition of roads in many parts of the state worsens during rainy seasons. The roads built after ensuring its quality will only stay and others will be swept away in rains.
Though a good amount is set apart in the budget for constructing low-quality roads, it is better to build roads that will last for years without damage.
Such quality roads are the touch stone for any state’s development when it comes to the development of basic infrastructure.
