Though three suspected terrorists among migrant labourers were nabbed from Kerala last week, the surveillance of the Kerala police and Intelligence wing here seems to be just for the sake it. Migrant labourers from other states started flocking to Kerala about two decades ago.
As more and more labourers from West Bengal, Bihar, UP, Rajasthan and Assam started coming here, this was used as an opportunity by criminals to sneak into the State. They also made Kerala a safe haven for their anti-social activities.

Most of these migrant labourers are working in fishing sector, constriction sector, cashew factories and hotels.
Though the business proprietors are told to submit the photos and ID card of the labourers at the nearest police station, these instructions are conveniently skipped.
The police also often don’t take pains to find out whether anyone are illegally working here.
Though there are several missions like Apna Khar Mission for the welfare of migrant labourers, not many are part of it.
Among the labourers reaching here there are Bangladeshis and people from places like Murshidabad and Silguri who believe in extremist ideologies.
They live in groups in certain areas and they also have Facebook and Whatsapp groups in their own language.
Since the police do not have their phone numbers or other details, they are not able to observe the communications or transactions. Though the Kerala police claim to have mechanisms including Cyberdom, their failure to sense the movements of Al-Qaeda terrorists in Ernakulum is seen as a big lapse.
