Kerala has got the permission of the Supreme Court to demolish and reconstruct the Palarivattom Flyover, the backbone of which was broken even before it completed three years of existence.

All including the expert engineers were well aware about the weak structures of the Palarivattom flyover.
The report given to the government was that flyover expert E Sreedharan and a team from IIT in Chennai will take up the work of demolition and reconstruction of flyover.
As procedures were going on accordingly the contractor company and the company which had the supervision charge intervened to take the matter to the court.
Their stand was that the flyover was had no complaints and this could be proved through load test of the bridge.
As the high court also endorsed the stand, the flyover has been in a state of closure for the past 16 months. The Supreme Court, which considered the appeal made by the government against the above stand, cancelled the high court order for load testing and issued an order for the demolition and reconstruction of the flyover.

Now the responsibility before the government is to start the work and complete it at the earliest.
E Sreedharan who had agreed to take up the job has now asked for one or two days to take a final decision as the DMRC led by him had completed its work in Kochi.

In the Palarivattom flyover, Rs 47 crore was spent. The serious of the big corruption behind the construction is very clear from the fact that the flyover could not be used at least for three years after its inauguration..
Quality checks by experts found out the fact that basic criteria to be followed while building such flyovers were not followed. From the Public Works Minister to the contractors, several persons are facing Vigilance inquiry over the corruption.
The usual practice here seen here is accused escaping from the clutches of law through its pholes of law if they have money in hand and political influence.

Interestingly, it took months for the police to file a case against the then Public Works Minister V. K. Ebrahim Kunju. The investigation is only going on and it seems to be heading towards nowhere

The corrupt people who brought shame to the Public Works Department should be penalised by the court of law at least before the new flyover come into existence.
