NEW DELHI: The global death toll due to the coronavirus infection has inched closer to the grim milestone of 10 lakh mark on Sunday as the pandemic continues to wreak havoc across the world.

According to the worldometer, a total of 9,98,721 people have lost their lives due to the virtual infection, while there were more than 33 lakh Covid-19 cases worldwide. The United States remains the nation's worst hit by the pandemic, with 7,065,019 cases and 204,249 deaths, making up more than 20 per cent of the global death toll.

Brazil recorded the world's second-largest death toll of 140,537, while India placed at the third spot in terms of Covid-19 fatalities. Countries with over 30,000 fatalities also include Mexico, Britain, Italy, Peru, France and Spain.

India accounts for nearly 10 per cent of global Covid-19 deaths. As many as 1,089 deaths were reported on Saturday, taking the toll to 93,379. As per the Union Health Ministry, the total case tally in the country stands at 59,03,933 including 9,60,969 active cases, 48,49,585 cured/discharged/migrated cases and 93,379 deaths.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the cumulative total samples tested up to September 25 were 7,02,69,975. The number of samples tested on September 25 is 13,41,535.
