THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Rapid spread of Covid-19 is happening in Kerala since the last one month. In the beginning, even the world media praised Kerala’s efforts to prevent Covid-19 but as cases started to increase lapses from government’s part came to light. Even though cases are spiking in the state, low death rates is a relief to the government. Compared to other states Kerala has a better health infrastructure which has played a detrimental role in the government’s Covid-19 prevention efforts. The Covid-19 death rate in Kerala is a mere 0.36%.
Former chief of clinical virology department in Velloor Christian Medical college, Dr T Jacob John in an interview given to an online media has said that low death rates in Kerala are due to the genetic mutation undergone by the virus, which has made it less destructive. The virus is witnessing a change in its genetic makeup in every 10 days, thus after 30-40 generations, its destructive nature has been withered off. Along with this new medical studies show that among those who wear the mask properly, the virus entered in their bodies is likely to be less destructive.
Dr T Jacob John has also praised Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s regular press brief through which he shares the latest Covid-19 statistics with the public. Dr John said this has boosted people’s confidence and it also put an end to the fake news on Covid-19 which is being transmitted via social media.
