THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Marking an end to the wait, chicken branded under Kudumbasree's KBFPCL company will reach the market. Kerala Chicken is part of the government's 100-day development plan. As part of this, 12 stalls were opened in Ernakulam, with 8 getting ready to open. 20 stalls will be opened in Kottayam and 10 in Thrissur. The Kerala Chicken stalls will be opened in Kozhikode and Wayanad this year.

Tamil Nadu lobby controls the chicken business in Kerala. With the omission of GST, chicken from Tamil Nadu was increased. The chicken farmers in Kerala started facing a crisis due to this. The Kerala brand chicken was started on FM Thomas Isaac to overcome this. There are poultry farms in Ernakulam, Thrissur, Wayanad and Alappuzha in connection with Kudumbasree. The chicken for the stalls will be supplied from here.

The idea of Kerala Chicken was put forward by finance minister Thomas Isaac after the price of chicken went up in Kerala post the floods in 2018. Kepco and Meat Products of India were interested in the program. A thousand farmers that can grow 1000 chicken will be identified. The farmers can also avail loan of Rs 10 lakhs without any guarantee. Kepco also started a project in which chicks will be given for Rs 45 and bought back at Rs 85 once it grows up. However, despite this not even one outlet was opened in the past 2 years. This was also due to financial crisis faced by poultry farms.
