It is not uncommon for authorities who are intolerant of criticism to seek even crooked means to silence their critics. In the past, the media has been a regular victim. With the advent of social media, it turned against them. Today, a citizen has the social media to speak out what he feels about anything. All you need is a cell phone to comment without fear.
He does not need anyone's help to shoot a video of what is going on around him and to let others know about it through social media. There are also widespread complaints about social media violating boundaries. Despite such complaints, they are now widely accepted. Social media also plays a notable role in exposing the many evils that take place in society and at the governmental level.
If the government goes about filing cases against comments and opinion seen on social media, the police will only have time to go hunting for social media users.
If we examine carefully, most posters will have sarcastic criticism against ministers and babus. If the government starts filing case against all such incidents, it will have to open thousands of courts and jails.
Now citizens are not like subservient subjects of kings. Even the Supreme Court observed that the practice of filing case against person based on social media posts is increasing in the country.
This itself shows the seriousness of the matter. If the police wish to file cases over trolls or comments on social media, they will be able to summon anyone anywhere to any police station.
Police will be able to easily find out incriminating posts.
But such police action will not be tolerated in any country that respects civil rights and freedom of expression.
The SC’s declaration that it will protect the freedom of expression at any cost comes as a valuable gift.
When hurt by criticism, the government first turns against media. But attempts to silence the media have always
failed, whoever is behind it.
Moreover, the attempts have backfired. We can get many examples for this.
In Kerala, the government has come forward with a new law in the name of regulating the social media. Eyes should not be closed to the rising protest against the law.
Against the backdrop of the snow-balling unfavourable incidents against the government, the CPM is preparing to organise protest gatherings against the government.
It is not at all appropriate for a government that argues vociferously for freedom of expression to resort to the path of protests against it.
