gold-smuggling

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: National investigating agencies are moving ahead with their probe in the gold smuggling case which stoked a controversy in the state. The probe which began with Swapna Suresh ended on the arrest of M Sivasankar, former principal secretary to the chief minister. Each day the investigating team is trying to get more details from Sivasankar, who is in the custody of the enforcement. When all this happens, one behind the curtain is satisfied and he is the ‘invisible informer’ who leaked information to the customs.

The customs will reward him an amount of Rs 45 lakh. Half of the amount will be given in the first phase. The remaining amount will be given after the completion of the case proceedings. It is believed that an amount of Rs 22.5 lakh has been paid to the informer already. The customs pay Rs 150 per gram for those who give accurate information about gold smuggling.

The reward is granted from the special fund of the centre. The customs will hand over the amount as currency to the person who gave the confidential information at the requested location. Personal information will be kept strictly confidential. No tax is imposed on this reward.

Only the customs commissioner will know the details of the person who passed the information. The gold of 30 kilos worth Rs 13.5 crore were seized by a team led by assistant commissioner Ramamoorthy based on the secret information received by the commissioner.
