KASARGOD: Manjeshwaram MLA M C Kamaruddin has been arrested in connection with the Jewellery investment scam. Pookoyo Thangal, another key accused in the case, is also likely to be arrested on Saturday. The probe team has received evidence against the MLA.

The MLA’s arrest has been registered on three cases filed in Chanthera police station. He was arrested after the police questioning which started at district police training headquarters on Saturday 10 am.

MC Kamaruddin has said that the arrest is politically motivated and it is part of a larger conspiracy. He said that he was summoned even without giving any notice. He will be presented before the magistrate after covid 19 tests.

His arrest has been recorded under non-bailable sections. The charges imposed on him could invite punishment of up to seven years in jail. 109 complaints are registered against M C Kamaruddin in connection with the jewellery scam in fashion gold jewellery. It is the first time in the history of the state that an MLA is being arrested. The arrests which come in the wake of local body polls have been a severe blow to UDF and Muslim League. UDF convenor MM Hassan has responded that MLA’s arrest is politically motivated.

As of now, the probe team has recorded testimonies of 80 persons. On Friday, Pookoya Thangal and the interlocutor appointed by Muslim League Kalladra Mayin Haji were questioned by police crime branch’s probe team. The probe team has sought information on details such as the assets of the Jewellery. The questioning held after summoning him in Kasargod Crime branch office.
