NEW DELHI: SC sends notice to UP government and police in connection with the arrest of journalist Siddique Kappan. The court will again consider the case on Friday. Senior lawyer Kapil Sibal who appeared in Supreme Court for Kerala Union for Working Journalists asked the court to give bail to the arrested journalist.

In the charge sheet filed by UP police against Kappan, the reason for the arrest is not specified. Even though when the police allege that Kappan reached UP with intention to wage attacks, police has not found any conclusive evidence to substantiate it. “A journalist is being lodged in prison for 42 days without any reason, therefore the court should immediately intervene over the issue,” Sibal said.

“Where is Kappan now?” Chief Justice asked. SC also said the reply of UP police and Supreme Court is also needed over the issue. The bench said that it is not ready to get into the merit of the case and it postponed the hearing to Friday saying final verdict coils be only issued after hearing government’s stand on the issue.
