KOCHI: The vigilance court will consider on Tuesday (November 24) the bail plea of former minister Ebrahim Kunju who is in custody in the Palarivattom Bridge corruption case. The court will also consider vigilance’ custody plea on that day.

The Moovattupuzha Vigilance Court, which heard the bail plea of the senior IUML MLA, also directed for setting up of a medical board to examine him as he is undergoing treatment at a hospital.

The vigilance team had earlier informed the court that former minister Ebrahim Kunju is not cooperating with the probe. He got financial gains in the construction of the bridge and through that the government suffered a heavy loss. He is suspected to have obtained a bribe and some documents of tax evasion were obtained from his house. This was mentioned in the custody plea of Kunju. Arguments are continuing in the case. Moovattupuzha Vigilance Court considered the case.

He planned a conspiracy while serving as the minister to get the contract. The minister was mum when asked about the source of Rs 4.50 crore in the newspaper's account. The vigilance alleged major tax evasion against him in the court. The vigilance informed the court that the commission he obtained in it should be probed.

Meantime, Kunju’s lawyer told the court that he has no role in the corruption and was named accused for giving permission for the construction of the bridge. The former minister is presently undergoing treatment at the Lakeshore Hospital. The vigilance can take him into custody only after he is discharged from the hospital within 14 days of the remand period. Meantime, industries secretary Mohammed Hanish has been named accused in the case. He has been named as the tenth accused in the case for sanctioning loan.
