KOLLAM: In 'Ramleela', there is an exciting clash between mother and son fighting head to head. Ramanunni, played by Dileep, defeated his mother Ragini. Though the story and circumstances are different, there is a contest between a mother and son to be held at Anchal Edamulakkal village panchayat in Kollam district. Sudharma Devaraj (54) and his son Dinuraj (31), of Divyalaya in Panachavila are the mother and son duo who are contesting against each other in the election. Sudharma is contesting the polls as a BJP candidate while her son Dinuraj is the CPM candidate.
For years, Sudharma and family are CPM activists. In the last election, there was a reservation for women in the seventh ward. When Sudharma asked for a seat, CPM didn't accept her request. A dejected Sudharma contested as a BJP candidate in the same ward in the last local body elections. She lost by a narrow margin of 35 votes. Sudharma recalls that just 20 more votes were enough to win the election.
Although this time it is the general seat, BJP gave the seat to Sudharma. As the competition intensified, CPM took a similar approach as in movies. Sudharma's son Dinu was made the opposition candidate. The mother was not shocked to learn that her son, a civil engineering graduate, had been nominated by the CPM. She instead gave him the confidence that they both can compete together. At first, Dinu was sad that the contest was against his mother. Mother and son leave home together for election campaign and then they happily take different ways. The locals are also amazed when the mother and son ask for votes. My mother is determined to win this time. And the son says that one among them will win. In any case, the locals are looking forward to see if the contest.
