THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: DGP is preparing to relaunch the controversial SIMS programme, which was withdrawn due to several allegations. The programme which was stalled following a CAG report is again going to be relaunched under the ‘tutelage’ of DGP. He had sent a circular demanding to implement the programme in banks and other co-operative institutions. The copy of the letter sent by DGP to the registrar of the co-operative department in this regard has also been out.
The SIMS project was halted following a CAG report which revealed serious irregularities in the police department. Under this programme, CCTV cameras will be installed in private institutions and the visuals will be continuously monitored from the police headquarters. Allegations from different corners emerged on the project, which said that under the garb of police department a private firm called Galaxone will reap fat profits under the project.
The private firm also opened a control room in police headquarters, which requires special permission even to enter, set off another controversy. With this, the project was halted, in order to enquire about the whereabouts of the firm.
DGP has demanded that the banks and other financial institutions which come under the co-operative department should join the programme. The cooperative department has also asked its institutions to join the programme. If the project is implemented, the private firm, Glaxaone will get profit worth lakhs.
Meanwhile, KPCC president Mullapally Ramachandran has said that DGP’s move testifies deep-rooted graft in SIMS programme. It is also alleged that the DGP is functioning as a middleman for the private firm to make profits.
