THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said that experts predict that Cyclone Burevi will reach Thiruvananthapuram from Sri Lanka on Friday after passing through Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu. The CM said that immediate steps have been taken to deal with the cyclone and discussed the matter with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, Cyclone Burevi, which formed in the Bay of Bengal, is likely to arrive in Thiruvananthapuram on December 4. Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Alappuzha, Idukki and Ernakulam districts will receive heavy rains and winds, the CM said.
Eight teams of NDRF have arrived. The Air Force and Navy are ready. The CM said the State Executive Committee, chaired by the Chief Secretary, had already met and assessed the situation and directed it to take necessary steps.
In Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Kottayam districts and parts of Idukki district winds are likely to blow at a speed of over 60 kmph. Ernakulam and other parts of Idukki are likely to experience winds of 30 to 40 kmph and heavy rains. Fishing has been banned until December 5.
