KOCHI: Opposition is brewing up in CPM against Zakir Hussain, former area secretary of the party in Kalamasery, who went to Bangkok, without informing the party. Hussain’s visit to the tourist site known for sex tourism and gambling has become the new talk among the party workers. The allegation that certain top leaders are giving undue protection to him is also strengthening in the party. On Monday, the party report which shows that Zakir has amassed wealth disproportionate to his income was out. Enforcement Directorate has also a complaint to probe Zakir’s financial transactions.
Bangkok, the capital of Thailand is notorious for sex tourism but it is also known for tourism and for its great cultural heritage. The south-east Asian nation is visited by many tourists every year which also include Malayalees. The present row against the CPM leader for making his journey a mysterious one and he even told the party-appointed enquiry panel that he took leave to go to Dubai and not to Bangkok. But the panel came to know that he visited Bangkok when the panel checked his passport. Prior approval from the party is required for foreign travel. Party workers are also demanding to know who accompanied him during the trip and the amount of money spend on travel.
Zakir went abroad in 2016 without informing the party. In the justification given to the party, he said that he has gone to Dubai. Party workers allege that there is something fishy in this trip. Zakir Hussain has acquired five homes in 10 years. The last home was bought by him at a price of Rs 76 lakh and for this, he took a loan of 65 lakh.
He was suspended from the post of area secretary following an in party probe by Ernakulam district committee. The probe report against him was prepared by state committee member C M Dinesh Mani and district secretariat member P R Muraleedharan.
Complaint on ties with Bineesh
Gireesh Babu, a public activist in Kalamassery has submitted a complaint in Enforcement Directorate over the Zakir illegally amassing wealth disproportionate to his income. The complaint says that the illegal income was earned through compromising and sabotaging criminal cases and also through quotation activities. It also added that most of these activities were undertaken using the ties with Bineesh Kodiyeri, son of former CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan.
