KOCHI: The jail department have denied Swapna Suresh’s allegation that her life is in danger in jail. The authorities said they have accurate records of the visitors who visited her and that no one but investigating officials and relatives had only seen her.
The authorities said her mother, daughter and her husband's brother visited her in jail. Swapna was lodged in Ernakulam, Viyyur and Attakkulangara jails. When the magistrate was recording her secret statement in Ernakulam for the last three days, she filed a plea seeking protection inside Attakulangara women’s jail in the capital city in the court considering economic offences.
The court had yesterday ordered protection for Swapna. A female guard has been assigned for her in the cell for 24 hours. More armed police has also been deployed outside the jail.
Her plea said that some threatened her before November 25 while lodged in Attakkulangara jail and they claimed to be police and jail officials.
Her plea said they threatened her not to reveal the names of any VIPs involved in the gold smuggling and asked her not to cooperate with any investigative agency. They threatened me that they were capable of causing harm to my family members and even capable of doing away with my life inside the prison if I indulged in any such disclosures. Her plea said that she has to go to Attakkulangara Women's Prison as COFEPOSA prisoner at the end of her customs custody. My life is not safe there. There is a possibility of mental and physical torture in prison. She raised the issue of safety while her confessional statements were recorded by the magistrate.
