poll-campaign

The relief the people has after seeing the completion of voting for local body polls in ten districts is no small. In the rest four districts the local body polls will happen on Monday.
The common complaint is that candidates and their supporters who are ready to do anything for the voters till the day of the election disappear from the scene soon after the election. But some may be ready to listen to the grievances of the people since straining the relationship with them is tantamount to digging their own grave as they need the people also for the next election.

One of the main environmental threats that is prevailing in ten districts, where the elections are over is from campaign materials of various political parties, most of which remain deserted.
The country and the city are like a temple premises after the festival. Posters are seen hanging everywhere on both sides of the road. Huge flex boards are at various corners and they can fall down at any time.

Attractive posters of candidates adorn the walls. It is not known at this time whether there is any rule to remove all these leftovers of campaigns…. Rules that could be imposed on all parties.

If there is such rule or not, authorities should come forward to clear the
Public places of all the craps. Municipalities and panchayats should come forward with action if the Election Commission does not have the power to do so. It was reported that the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation was getting ready to take up the task.

If no one comes forward, the workers of the corporation will be sent to clear everything.
.

The expense for this will be charged from the respective candidates.
Other local body institutions can also follow this mode. Cleanliness in public is utmost important whether it is Corporation area or panchayat area. The candidates who contested should have taken up this responsibility.

The political leaders who talk volumes of clean city and green city should open their eyes and see the state of affairs in public places.

In this context, Thiruvananthapuram Vikasana Munneettam, which contested for the first time in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, turned a role model.

In all 14 wards they contested, they removed the campaign materials. It is the frontline parties that are showing laziness and neglect.

Despite the poll code of conduct coming into effect, there has been flow of money into the poll scene, with contestants spending lavishly overstepping the limitations stipulated by rules.

All rules were confined to papers and even the conductors of election turned a Nelson’s eye.

Now, rules should be framed to avoid party workers from dumping campaign materials in public places.

It should be made the responsibility of candidates and the parties they represent to clear the places. Banned items like plastic and flex boards should not be allowed in campaign scene.

Long threads with posters hanging on it and that are usually tied near polling booths are a threat to motorists and pedestrians. These appears to be simple if the thread snaps and fall on road sides, it will be pose a danger to commuters of road.

For carrying out the responsibilities towards people, political parties don’t need power and positions. They can do service even without holding posts.

They themselves should come forward to remove the garbage, created by them.
