KANNUR: Police has tightened police security in Kannur district ahead of local body polls to be held tomorrow. Kannur SP Yateesh Chandra has said that 64 booths in the high range area face Maoist threat and special security force like Thunderbolt and triple lock facility should be put in place near the polling stations.

There are 1,671 booths which are problem-affected. Yatheesh Chandra also added that those who are causing hindrance to peaceful polling will be arrested and 8,000 police personnel have been mobilised in the four districts which go for polls on Monday. He also added that 1,500 cameras have been put into place to prevent bogus voting.

6,867 booths from 354 local government institutions in Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasargod are going for polls on Monday. 89,74, 993 voters are exercising their franchise which includes 42,87,597 men, 46,87, 310 women and 86 transgenders. It also includes 71,906 first time voters and 1,747 NRI voters. 10,842 polling booths have been made available.

Distribution of voting machines and other related equipment will begin on Sunday at 8.00 am. There are 76 poll-related equipment distribution centres in four districts. 52, 285 poll officials have been mobilised for election duty.
