THRISSUR: Renowned writer and professor Dr Kalpetta Balakrishnan (75) passed away in Kochi on Monday. He was undergoing treatment at Lakeshore hospital in Kochi.

Balakrishnan had served as a teacher in various institutions such as Sree Kerala Varma College in Thrissur, Sree Sankaracharya University Thrissur Regional Center, S. K. M. J. High School From Kalpetta, Mar Athanasius College and High School. He retired from Kerala Varma College in 1999 as the Head 0f the Department.

Born in 1945, Balakrishnan secured the second rank in MA Malayalam from Kerala University. He did his PhD on the influence of Gandhian ideology in Malayalam literature. He had served as a senate member in Cochin and Calicut Universities. He was also a member of the Language Institute, Bala Sahitya Institure, Sarvavijnanakosam Institute and South Zone Cultural Council.

Some of his famous literary works are Akalcha, Choolimala, Akamporul Puramporul, Ramawarriorude Ormapusthakam, Appoloyude Veena, Kalaghattam, Charithra novel Malayalathil and FM kavithakal. He was the scriptwriter of national award-winning movie 'Malamukalile Daivam' and 'Shakthan Thamburan'.

Balakrishnan is survived by wife Dr K Saraswathy, sons Jayasurya, Kashyap and daughter Aparna.
