The massive victory of the LDF in the local body elections is something that the Front and especially the chief minister can take pride in.
In the current circumstances, even the leaders of the LDF might not have expected such a victory.
That much tumultuous was the political atmosphere here.
Through the performance in the local body elections, the government has regained its image it had lost in the wake of controversies and allegations.
All expectations of the UDF that unpredictable people will go along with them and script a new politics in Kerala have fallen flat.
The results have dismayed the UDF leadership which had expected a better performance and the results have also proved that the allegations and protest means unleashed at the LDF could not make any impact.
The UDF stand was that the local body polls would be the people’s verdict over government.
People have given the verdict. But that verdict has given full support to the government policies.
The fact that there is no anti-government sentiment among people also is a big relief for the ruling front.
Only in municipalities, the UDF was able get an upper hand.
In the six corporations, LDF won in five.
In Thrissur Corporation, no one has single majority.
In Kochi what helped the LDF was the support given by a rebel candidate, who had won the election.
Jose K Mani’s entry to the LDF was a shot in the arm for the latter.
This helped the LDF to grab Pala Municipal administration or the first time.
Twent20s inroads into Kizhakkambalam and other nearby places were also an interesting development.
BJP also could put up a good fight and got some shining victories.
Like the last time, they were able to win 35 seats in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation.
Besides, retaining power in Palakkad Corporation, the BJP also got the administration of the Pandalam Corporation for the first time.
They also came to power in 24 gram panchayats.
In Kochi and Thrissur, the BJP would be able to become a decisive power.
There is als cetain panchayats where there is no majority for anyone.
The results of the LSG polls give home lessons for all parties who will be going to polls within the next five months.
It is for sure that the UDF is answerable to its allies for the drubbing it received in the election.
It is high time that the Opposition understood that persistently and annoyingly slamming the government for any reason or no reason is not the way to influence the people.
Similarly the government should not waste time over things that may trigger controversy and instead, should live up to expectations of the people.
The victory given by the people in the local body election bestows on the government more responsibilities.
