THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The ingenuity shown by the third accused Sister Sephy to establish that she is a virgin in order to escape from the case backfired on her. The CBI found out that Sephy had undergone hymenoplasty surgery to implant hymen. The CBI had also found out that Fr Jose Poothrikkayil and Fr Thomas Kottur had an illicit affair with Sister Sephy of Pius Tenth Convent which led to Abhaya's murder. After her arrest, Sephy underwent a medical examination on November 25, 2008 and Dr Lalithambika Karunakaran, the police surgeon at Alappuzha Medical College found that she had undergone hymenoplasty surgery which was turning point in the case. The surgery was performed in accordance with legal advice that Sephy could escape the case if it can be established that she is a virgin. Later narco-analysis revealed that Sephy had illicit relations with the clergymen. But the High Court prevented the narco-analysis results from being used as an evidence.
