THRISSUR: An agreement has been reached in the LDF in considering a Congress rebel for the mayor post of Thrissur Corporation. M K Varghese who contested as Congress rebel will become the mayor. He will serve as mayor for the first two years. The decision was taken after talks held between CPM leaders including Minister A C Moideen.
Varghese’ demand that he be made mayor for the whole five-year term delayed the decision. This was not accepted by the CPM leaders. He later stuck to three years but that was also not acceptable. The decision to make him mayor for the first two years was finally approved in the late night meeting held Saturday. The remaining three years will be shared by the CPM and the CPI. An official announcement will be made this evening. The LDF won 24 seats, UDF-23, NDA-six and Congress rebel one in Thrissur Corporation which has 54 divisions.
Varghese contested from Nettissery division as an independent candidate after congress denied him ticket and won with a margin of 38 votes.
