THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The DGP ordered a probe on the death of the couple who immolated themselves in front of the officials who came to implement a court order. The DGP ordered the probe after the couple’s children, relatives and locals levelled allegations against the police. Thiruvananthapuram rural SP B Ashok will be in charge of the investigation.

It has been alleged that the police acted in haste to evict the family following a complaint of their neighbour. The court had issued another order giving them time till January 4. Police were moving ahead with eviction proceedings in defiance of the order. Rajan and his wife suffered burns when they immolated themselves in a bid to thwart this.

Rajan sought more time from the police but was not granted. Revenue officials were not there when police came for eviction proceedings. These are the allegations levelled against the police.

Initial reports mentioned lapse from the side of the police. The couple’s son Rahul and Renjith accused the police of leading their family to dire straits.
