THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Police have registered a case against the protesters in the incident where a couple set themselves on fire during land eviction in Neyyattinkara. The case is for staging a protest after stopping the ambulance carrying Ambili's body. The case has been registered against about 30 people for obstructing police action and violating Covid control. Police have also registered a case against Rajan who committed suicide.
When the body reached Neyyattinkara in an ambulance from the medical college at 5 pm, it was stopped by children and locals on the road near the house. The protesters demanded to take legal action against Vasantha, who had filed a case in connection with the land, to take action against the policeman who is guilty, to provide government employment for the children and to provide housing for the children on the same land.
Although the Neyyattinkara DySP and the tehsildar tried to pacify the locals, the protesters demanded that the collector should come directly and give assurances. The protest ended two and a half hours later when the collector arrived and assured that the demands would be considered.
The complainant Vasantha had earlier stated that she was withdrawing from the case but later came to the scene with the stand that the land could not be handed over. Owing to the public protest, Vasantha was taken into preventive custody by the police. Following this, Ambili's body was cremated.
