THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The newborn baby, who was found abandoned in a garbage heap at Kalluvathukkal in Kollam, died on Tuesday evening. The baby breathed its last while undergoing treatment at SAT hospital in Thiruvananthapuram.

The two-day-old baby was found abandoned in a garbage heap behind a house near the Kalluvathukkal Oozhiyakod temple. The inmates of the house came to know about the presence of the child after he cried non-stop in the early morning.

After being informed by them, police rushed to the spot and shifted the infant to the nearby Parippally Medical College. The baby was later shifted to the SAT hospital due to shortness of breath and changes in heart rate. The child weighed three kilograms. The initial conclusion was that a lung infection was the cause of death. The baby is likely to be buried in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday after postmortem.
