KOCHI: Today marks one year since the demolition of flat complexes in Maradu. The flats built in violation of the Coastal Regulation Zone rules in the Maradu municipal area were demolished through implosion as per the Supreme Court verdict. Proceedings remain, including the distribution of compensation to flat owners.
It was destroyed by a controlled implosion on January 11 and 12, 2020. The government has not decided whether to hand over the land to the owners.
The flat owners were given immediate compensation of Rs 25 lakh each but the final compensation has not been fixed. The Justice Balakrishnan Nair Commission appointed by the Supreme Court received 143 applications regarding this. Compensation was for those with the title deed and contract. The owner did not pay compensation for flats with deceased owners and flats of the manufacturer's relatives. Those who owned five to two flats were only given temporary compensation for one flat. The distribution will be completed as per the final order of the Supreme Court.
According to the documents received by the commission, the flat owners paid Rs 110 crore to the manufacturers. The apex court had asked the manufacturers to return the money and hand over Rs 20 crore in the first phase. The two builders informed the commission that they will sell other flats and pay for them.
