KOCHI: The customs will question Speaker Sreeramakrishnan in the dollar smuggling case. His statement will be taken unofficially without serving notice. The customs move is to proceed with the proceedings if the statements of the accused against the speaker are found to be true.

The accused had stated that the Speaker has investments in Gulf educational sector. The customs had earlier questioned Naz Abdullah, speaker’s friend in the case. It was found that the speaker had used the SIM card which was in the name of Naz. The customs also found that calls were made to the accused from this SIM card. The customs said the SIM was not used after the diplomatic smuggling was revealed.

In an interview with a private channel, the speaker admitted that he had used the SIM. The speaker said that he took a SIM using Naz’ identity card as he did not have one. This SIM was used for his personal needs and may have probably called the accused including Swapna, he said.

Swapna Suresh, accused in the gold smuggling case, lodged in Attakulangara Jail had given statement that those holding constitutional post are also involved in the case. Sarith, another accused in the case also said the same. The customs registered this as secret statement. These statements turned crucial against the speaker.
